As part of United Friends of the Children’s advocacy efforts, Chief Programs and Policy Officer Derric Johnson represented UFC at the National Youth Employment Coalition’s (NYEC) 2024 Youth Days in Washington, D.C., from September 11th-13th. The event gathered over 130 participants, including government officials, nonprofit leaders, and youth advocates, with a focus on empowering young people and driving policy change to improve their futures.
Derric joined the LA County delegation to lobby for the reauthorization of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), advocating for increased regional funding to support youth employment and career development. They met with the offices of Congressmembers Jimmy Gomez and Nanette Diaz Barragán to highlight the importance of federal resources for programs fostering economic mobility for young people.
In addition, Derric is exploring ways to connect UFC youth with NYEC’s national initiatives, which align with UFC’s commitment to preparing young people for economic success. More updates on these initiatives will be shared as they progress.
